GPID (Global Placement ID) is a placement-level identifier used in programmatic advertising to give demand partners a granular, transparent signal about exactly which ad unit is being auctioned. It was established by The Trade Desk (TTD) as a way to identify ad placements at a specific, consistent level — not just the site or domain, but the individual placement.
Why does GPID matter?
The Trade Desk uses GPID to compare identical supply being offered by multiple SSPs at the same time. When the same placement comes in from multiple supply paths, TTD uses this information to determine which SSP is offering the most efficient route to that inventory and biases spend accordingly.
Beyond path efficiency, GPID adoption unlocks real monetization benefits:
-
Higher win and match rates with DSPs that support it, including The Trade Desk, DV360, and Amazon DSP
-
Stronger CPMs, as demand partners can better evaluate and target known placements by name
-
Granular auction controls, enabling floor prices and take rates to be set at the ad unit level
-
Access to demand budgets that require placement-level transparency as a prerequisite
TTD treats GPID adoption as a quality baseline for marketplace participation and expects adoption rates as close to 100% as possible.
How is GPID passed in the bid request?
GPID is transmitted in the OpenRTB bid request at imp.ext.gpid. If that field is not populated, Sovrn can fall back to reading the value from imp.ext.dfp_ad_unit_code.
To maximize demand eligibility, you should ensure imp.ext.gpid is populated on every impression where a placement-level identifier is available.
